History

Finding any name that has not been registered before is more difficult than one imagines. Karroo is derived from the ship SS Karroo which Karroo's founder's great grandfather, Lieutenant-Colonel Carew Reynell sailed on from Melbourne Docks, Victoria, Australia to Gallipoli with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 15th February 1915.

Carew gave up his leadership of the family vineyards at Reynella, the birthplace of South Australia's acclaimed and internationally renowned wine industry, to volunteer his services in the First Great War. Chateau Reynella, established in 1838, is recognised as South Australia's first and oldest commercial winery.

A diary he kept throughout, and entries added by others, shows a young man, driven by a deep sense of loyalty, to fight for his Country. His bravery, courage and leadership are without doubt and a matter of public record. Among his seniors and subordinates alike, he was also seen as a person of great honour and integrity and who was fiercely loyal to his Regiment and men; The 9th Australian Light Horse. These are all values that any person or company would be proud to uphold, and therefore a name that resonated, has meaning and provides us a good compass.
